Loose crusher run shrinks by 10-15% when compacted. If you buy only enough for the measured finished depth, the completed base may be half an inch too shallow. For that reason, this calculator starts with a +10% allowance selected. You may also hear it called crush and run or 2 inch minus on some tickets. It is crushed stone containing fines, weighing about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, and those fines help create a stable surface under tires.

Order for compacted depth

  1. Find the area in feet by multiplying length by width for a lane or pad.
  2. Choose the finished compacted depth for your layer. Use 4 inches for pavers and paths, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 in truck areas.
  3. To calculate, take cubic feet / 27 for yards and x 1.5 for tons. Leave the +10% selected. The listed depths apply after rolling, not while material is loose.

Suitable uses

  • For a driveway, compact a 4-6 inches base layer. Add 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel on top for the driving surface.
  • For low-cost rural lanes, crusher run can be used by itself as a driving surface. It can get dusty in summer and may need grading again every 2-4 years.
  • Pavers and slabs need a 4 inches base placed in 2-inch lifts and compacted. Calculate the entire paver buildup with the Paver Base Calculator.
  • Use 4 inches for shed and hot-tub pads after stripping the ground. Increase it to 6 on soft soil.
  • Do not use it in a French drain. The fines help crusher run bind, but they also retain water; use clean #57 or drain rock for drainage.

Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad

For 200 square feet finished at 4 inches after compaction, the calculation is 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. Order 4 tons to account for the allowance. Place one half, compact it, then add and compact the remaining material. Two 2-inch layers hold up for years longer than a single 4-inch placement. An afternoon rental of a plate compactor costs less than the first pothole repair, especially where rain can work into an uncompressed base.

Delivery guidance

  • Have the base material and surface stone delivered together to keep the project moving. Delivery is free either way.
  • Start at the far end of the run, then spread material back toward the pile. On large pads, working downhill instead of uphill saves a full day.
  • Lightly mist each lift before you compact it. In Hawaii's rainy conditions, crusher run tightens more visibly when damp than dry.
  • Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for touch-ups. You can use the same material to fill potholes if they develop.

How much crusher run is needed for a driveway?
Calculate lane area by compacted depth of 4-6 inches, convert using 1.5 tons per yard, then add 10%. For a 50 x 10 ft lane at 4 inches, the delivered amount is about 10 tons.
What does a yard of crusher run weigh?
A cubic yard typically weighs 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, with rain adding a little more weight. Fines fill gaps between the stones, making it heavier than clean gravel.
How is crusher run different from gravel?
Crusher run includes stone dust, while #57 gravel is screened without it. The dust creates a compacted base. Clean stone stays open for drainage and loose surface use. In a driveway, place them in that sequence.
Are crush and run and crusher run identical?
The naming changes by region, not the material. Crusher run and 2 inch minus refer to the same material family. The blend delivered is the same under either name.
Can crusher run remain as the surface?
Yes, for rural drives with light traffic. It compacts into a solid crust that works through changing weather. Expect dust during dry periods and grading again every few years. A later 2 inches layer of #57 can address both.
How much will crusher run compress?
Plan for ten to fifteen percent compaction. Once rolled, a 4-inch loose layer becomes about 3.5 inches. This is why the calculator turns on its allowance by default and why specifications state compacted depth.
