One cubic yard measures 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk materials are sold by that cube or by the ton, so ordering starts with converting the size of your project into one of those units. These calculators make that conversion for 24 materials, using each material's actual weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch is about 600 lb per yard, while crusher run is 3,000 lb per yard. The cube is the same size, but its weight can be five times greater. That is why material-specific calculations provide a better tonnage estimate than a general aggregate tool.

Calculation method
Start with the footprint: multiply length by width in feet. Multiply that result by the depth in feet, with inches divided by 12, to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to find cubic yards, then multiply the yards by the material density for tons.
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)
Project depth can change the amount more than most people expect. For example, a 10 x 10 patio filled to 2 inches takes half the stone needed at 4 inches. If you have not chosen a depth, look at the recommended project depths on the material page first.

Choosing material for your project
- For a driveway or parking pad, figure road base or crusher run as the lower course, then calculate #57 stone or driveway gravel for the finish layer. Calculate the two layers separately.
- For ponding water, a wet trench, or a French drain, plan on clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or more.
- Put shredded mulch in planting areas. For a border with no refresh needed, choose river rock.
- Thin or bare lawn areas need 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before laying sod or putting down seed.
- Use fill dirt to bring up the grade or fill a hole, then reserve topsoil for the upper 4 to 6 inches.
- A paver patio uses a compacted base topped with exactly 1 inch of bedding sand. Use the Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators to estimate each layer separately.
- Playground fall zones: maintain pea gravel at a depth of 9 to 12 inches.
- For a washing-out bank or shoreline, install riprap over fabric in 12-inch-plus layers.
