Heavy rain, rather than ground frost, is the main weather concern for many hardscape projects in Hawaii. Windward lots can stay saturated in heavy clay, while other ground drains much faster. #89 Crushed Stone is useful where a compacted finish is wanted, but it should not be treated as open drainage material. Its angular crushed pieces carry fines and lock together when compacted.
During placement, sweep #89 Crushed Stone into paver gaps or spread it beneath flagstone before compacting it in place. This gives the material a firm fit in close quarters around the finished work. It can also serve in chip-seal applications and concrete mixes. On rain-exposed sites, keep storm-water planning focused on the supporting ground and drainage route, not on this compacting aggregate.

Dogs track in less mud now
Ordered three tons of 89 stone through Hawaii Rock Supply as a pea gravel substitute for a dog run out near Hawi. It doesn't scatter nearly as much as true pea gravel once it settles, and the dogs track in a lot less mud now. Edged it with landscape timbers first, which the crew recommended and it made a real difference keeping it contained.

Dry foundation after two wet winters
Living up in Volcano means dealing with vog haze some days and a foundation that never quite drains right in all that volcanic soil. We put five tons of 89 stone around the perimeter of the house where water used to pool against the foundation after every downpour. It settled in nice and even, no big chunks to sort through like the batch we got years back from a hardware store. My husband laid the pavers for a little path off the lanai with the leftover and it looks sharp. Two winters later, dry foundation, no more mildew smell in the crawl space.
