Maui County, HI Gravel and Landscape Rock Delivery

Maui County, HI Gravel and Landscape Rock Delivery

Hawaii Rock Supply sells gravel, stone and aggregate delivery in Maui County, HI, ordered online and tipped on site by dump truck. Start with base course, the compacting layer under drives, pads and flatwork.

In Hawaii that means crushed basalt, and it is what island yards and county public works books call it.

Each product page carries a calculator, so you can size the load before you order. Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard.

Ground Conditions Across Maui County

Maui County spans more than one ground region, and the ground changes a lot between them. On the Central Maui and leeward side, deep wind-blown sand and old dune deposits run across the Puunene and Kahului isthmus.

That leeward ground sits in the rain shadow of two mountains. The water that causes trouble there is not local rain but gulch flow coming off the West Maui slopes and Haleakala.

Upcountry and the north shore are a different story. Volcanic ash and ash-derived soils cover the Haleakala slopes above Makawao and Kula.

Ash soils hold water and stay soft under load. The gulches cut through them and carry runoff away fast, so bedding and base layers have to cope with ground that is rarely dry.

Molokai and Lanai are mostly dry, with expansive clay and old plantation red dirt across the dry central and west ends. Runoff reaches the flats as gulch flow off wetter ground rather than as rain falling where it lands.

Clay that has cracked open through the dry months takes that water badly.

Work runs year round. Winter Kona storms bring the flash flows, and summer trades funnel hard through the isthmus and lift dust off anything left bare.

Upcountry and the Hana side stay soft from October through April.

Materials Delivered in Maui County

Order by what you are building. A driveway, a patio and a drain each call for a different material.

Base course carries the most weight in what you plan. It is crushed basalt.

Section 304 covers placing it.

Subbase is a separate item. Subsection 703.17 describes it as gravel, stone, basalt or coral, and Coral Fill is specified that way rather than as a base course material.

Crushed coral comes from quarried inland caprock, not from the shoreline.

For a drive, pair base course with a surfacing layer such as Driveway Gravel. For a patio, bed pavers on screenings over a compacted base.

For drainage, 3/8" Crushed Stone or drain rock handles the water.

Choosing the Right Material

Base course is the compacting layer. It binds and tightens under a plate, which is what makes it right under a slab, a shed or a parking pad.

Blue rock is clean crushed basalt at the 3/4 inch size, with the fines washed out. It drains, so it belongs in drainage beds, trench bottoms and construction entrances rather than under flatwork.

Cinder is an island material. Black cinder is denser and takes foot traffic, while red cinder is lighter and used decoratively in beds and planters.

Screenings are fine basalt, used as a bedding layer under pavers, flagstone and slabs, and for filling joints. They do not drain the way clean stone does.

For drainage work, drain rock is durable lava rock. Drywells and rock pits lean on it because many subdivisions have no street storm drain to tie into.

Sand splits by job. Mason Sand goes into block and brick work, mortar and paver joints, and is generally manufactured from crushed basalt or blended with calcareous sand.

Washed sand is bedding and leveling sand.

For growing ground, topsoil and Garden Soil build a planting layer where the ground is thin over lava or heavy leeward clay. Shredded Mulch holds moisture in beds on the dry leeward side.

Delivery Across Maui County

Order online and pick a quantity by the ton or by the yard. The calculator on each product page helps you size the load before checkout, and you choose a delivery date there.

A dump truck tips the load on site in one pile. Delivery covers Kahului, Kihei, Wailuku, Lahaina, Makawao, Kula, Kaunakakai, Paia, Hana and Haiku.

On the leeward side, plan for ground that will not soak up gulch flow. Upcountry and the Hana coast stay soft through the wet months, so a clean drainage layer under the work helps there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Maui County

Each product page has a calculator, and quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Size the load there before you check out.

Yes. Hawaii Rock Supply delivers bulk aggregate across Maui County, including Kahului, Kihei, Wailuku, Lahaina, Makawao, Kula, Kaunakakai, Paia, Hana and Haiku.

What is the difference between crushed stone and Natural Pea Gravel?

Crushed stone has angular, broken faces from crushing, so it binds and compacts. Natural Pea Gravel is rounded, and 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel suits walkways, play areas and planters. Rounded natural gravel is far less common in the islands than crushed basalt chips at the same size.
