Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel in Hana, HI
Hawaii Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Hana, HI for two kinds of buyers: contractors building on the Hana coast and homeowners working on their own drives and yards. If you are laying a drive, a parking pad or a slab base, the material you want is base course.
In Hawaii that means crushed basalt, the compacting layer under flatwork. The ground here is thin soil over young lava and steep gulch walls, so what sits under your project matters as much as what sits on top.
Materials for Hana Projects
Base and driveway surfacing is where most Hana ground work starts, so start with base course. It is also called 3/4 inch minus base course, untreated base, or crushed basalt base course, and it is the layer that carries a drive, a parking pad, or the slab and shed bases behind it.
3F Base Course is the material to reach for when you need a compacting layer that will hold up under flatwork. Where a drive or pad wants a binding material that knits together under traffic, Crusher Run does that job, sold by its nominal size as 3/4 inch minus or 1-1/2 inch minus.
Topping an existing drive is its own decision. Driveway Gravel surfaces a drive or caps a compacted base course layer, which is what long rural drives on the outer islands need.
Above the base, the choices split by what the stone has to do. 3/4 Blue Rock is clean crushed basalt at that size, used for drainage beds, drive surfacing, trench bottoms and construction entrances.
3/8" Crushed Stone, which island quarries list as chips, goes over a compacted base, beds pipes, and handles fine drainage and paths.
Drainage stone is a separate family. Drain Rock, also called filter rock or lava rock, fills drywells, rock pits, French drains, foundation drains and downspout runs.
That matters here because many subdivisions have no street storm drain to tie into, so a drywell carries the water.
Sand and soil round out a job. Washed Sand beds and levels under slabs.
Mason Sand handles block and brick work, mortar and paver joints. Top Soil builds a growing layer for lawns and beds, and Garden Soil fills raised beds and planters.
Ground and Conditions in Hana
Start with water, because on this side of Maui it decides how a base behaves. Trade-wind rain on the windward flank of Haleakala runs from steady showers on the Haiku bench to some of the wettest built-up ground in the state out toward Hana.
That rain does two things to a project. Ash soils hold water and stay soft under load, and the gulches cut through them and carry runoff away fast.
So the ground under a base layer is rarely dry, and a base course layer has to cope with that rather than sit on it.
Erosion follows the same pattern across the North shore, upcountry and east Maui side. Gulch and stream scour along the coast, slips on saturated ash slopes, and sheet erosion across cleared pasture all move ground that was not armoured.
Where a bank, culvert outlet or slope edge needs holding, RipRap is the material for it. One man rock is the island name for the hand-placeable sizes used on gulch and stream bank armoring and shoreline work.
Timing matters too. Work runs year round here, but the ground is softest from October through April, and the Hana side stays wet in any month.
Plan bedding and base work around when the ground will take a load.
Delivery to Hana and the Surrounding Area
Bulk material arrives by dump truck, and the truck tips the load in one pile on site. That is the whole of it, so the useful thing to have ready is a clear, level spot the truck can reach and turn around in.
Ordering happens online. You choose a quantity by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator if you want to size the load before you order.
You pick a delivery date at checkout.
Hana sits in Maui County, and delivery covers the island, including Kahului, Kihei, Wailuku, Lahaina and Makawao. If your site is on a long rural drive or a gulch-side lot, think about access before the truck arrives.
